The Managing Council offices happen to be in the Gowanus Green complex. To get there we ride a tram to a pedestrian bridge. Over the bridge to a second set of security turnstiles and then the park on the far side. The greenery is dotted with trees and carbon capture and funnel windmills that start to spin lazily as the sky begins to mist. The canal’s edge is marshy with reeds and ducks and frog calls—a spongy buffer zone that Emi hardly seems to notice. Neither does she give more than a glance at the posters plastered on the windmills. Some are Wanted posters in Wild West style. Others have the Furies’ manifesto. Many feature the Phoenix emblem in negative or neon or Gothic or Transition art deco. Emi speed-walks past all of them. Pausing only to swivel her head at me. Her face beaded in mist and a look of annoyance, like why can’t I walk any faster?
